Since 2000, the people of Uaxactún have been granted a usufruct of 83,500 hectares of protected forest by Conap (National Council of Protected Areas) to take care of. And the community has developed ways to generate income without destroying the natural reserve: xate, pepper, handicrafts and community tourism with low environmental impact.
