Costa Rica's Indigenous Peoples to Celebrate their Culture with Sports and Traditional Games in Talamanca

The Kábata Könana Talamanca Cabécar Kábata Women's Association is in charge of organizing these sports games, which will include the participation of athletes and residents of the Bribri and Cabécar indigenous territories. In addition, representatives from other indigenous territories of the country will compete, such as Tayní, located in the region of La Estrella, Limón, and Nairi Awari, also on the Caribbean coast, as well as from the Southern Zone, including Boruca, Curré, Salitre and Térraba.

The event will feature competitions in a variety of games that are part of the ancestral culture of the eight indigenous peoples that have inhabited the Costa Rican territory long before the founding of the country. There will be bow and arrow competitions, both in archery and long distance, log races, open water swimming, rope pulling, among other games.

The evening of Friday, April 26 will be marked by presentations of indigenous art, including poetry, music and other lively expressions of indigenous peoples, at the Colegio de China Kichá. On Saturday 27, individual and team competitions will be held at the Gavilán Canta plaza, with the participation of more than 100 representatives from indigenous territories.

Costa Rica is home to eight indigenous peoples: Bribri, Cabécar, Maleku, Chorotega, Huetar, Ngäbe, Brunka and Borán, who manage 24 indigenous territories. For more information, contact Gamaliel Molina Díaz of the Cabécar Indigenous Territory at (506) 8877-0228.
