Statement by the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests in Support of Environmental Conservation in Panama

Currently, we live under an economic and political model based on the dispossession and accelerated extraction of our common goods, including minerals, water, forests, air, knowledge, through the commodification of the lands of our countries. Under the imposition of this extractivist model, the peoples of the region have been struggling against the destruction of our social, economic, political and cultural structures.

Consequently, we call on the Panamanian state to value the environmental assets that are the future of sustainable life and to review the approaches to mining, taking into consideration:

  1. Indigenous Peoples' RightsWe strongly support the position of the Indigenous Peoples of Panama in their rejection of the mining contract. We demand the respect and promotion of the rights of Indigenous Peoples, including the right to consultation and free, prior, informed and culturally appropriate consent.
  2. Forest and Biodiversity Conservation: We recognize that mining poses a significant risk to our forests and biodiversity in the region.
  3. SustainabilityWe advocate sustainable practices in the management of natural resources and reject any activity that endangers the safety of communities and fragile ecosystems, such as the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

The Mesoamerican Peoples and Forests Alliance reaffirms its support for the indigenous peoples of Panama in their struggle for the preservation of Mother Earth, and the defense of their territories and rights. Together, we are committed to protecting the Mesoamerican region and its natural resources for present and future generations.
