Women territorial leaders to hold first Mesoamerican Precongress

With the slogan "We are rivers, we are blood, we are the voice that cultivates life", women leaders from Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico will participate. The meeting will be held in Panama City, Panama, on November 21, in preparation for the VII Mesoamerican Territorial Congress.

The activity aims to make visible the challenges and progress in the territories and make recommendations for reforms to public policies with a rights-based approach that promote gender equality and respect for the rights of indigenous and community women; and strengthen the role of women in the conservation of culture, language and food security.
The leaders will also define a mechanism to articulate the vision and voice of women in national and regional policies and actions on climate change issues and actions.

For Sara Omi, President of the General Emberá Congress of Alto Bayano, "the approach of the territorial women of Mesoamerica, both indigenous women and local communities, will be the opportunity to seek the necessary synergies, share experiences and accompany the processes carried out by the territorial organizations. It is the women of local communities who maintain and provide education for present and future generations, and that is why it is necessary for territorial women to make a major contribution to the territorial governance of local communities and indigenous peoples, and this Pre-Congress allows us to position that voice".

Sara Omi, President Emberá Alto Bayano Congress

In recent decades, several indigenous women's organizations have participated in international dialogues and various women's conventions. In doing so, they have positioned the undeniable value of women in humanity and achieved important advances and recognition of women's rights in society; however, despite the struggles won, a very relevant sector of women has not been adequately involved.

One of the main concerns of indigenous women is the recognition of indigenous peoples' rights to self-determination, including rights to their territories and natural resources, which are an intrinsic part of their survival, development, identity and self-determination.
