Indigenous peoples and local communities have suffered some of the worst consequences of climate change and unsustainable development, not to mention the persecution of defenders of indigenous peoples and local territories around the world. Yet they have managed to keep their forests among the most conserved despite violence, legal insecurity and criminalization.

This is why since 2013 the Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) is focused on knowledge and information for integrated land use. This initiative brings together world leaders, scientists, private sector representatives, farmers, and community and civil society leaders to accelerate action towards creating more resilient, equitable, efficient and climate-friendly landscapes.

«El tema del cambio climático en los pueblos indígenas lo entendemos como un problema de la humanidad, no es problema únicamente de los pueblos indígenas. El cambio climático va a afectar tanto al político, al rico, al pobre, al científico, a todos los que vivimos en este planeta» comentó Levi Sucre, líder indígena Bri Bri y Coordinador de la AMPB, en relación a la importancia de generar propuestas que disminuyan los efectos ante el cambio climático.

The GLF is now entering a new phase where it will connect 1 billion people to create sustainable landscapes over the next five years. In turn, it seeks to highlight innovative ideas and solutions, strengthen knowledge and action. The GLF will seek the widespread adoption of a rights-based approach to sustainability that recognizes and safeguards the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities to territory and resources, and participation in their governance.

Durante el evento el 22 y 23 de junio del presente año, Gustavo Sánchez, presidente de la Red Mexicana de Organizaciones Campesinas Forestales (Red Mocaf) e integrante de la comisión ejecutiva de la AMPB, participará en espacios para compartir y crear soluciones comunitarias, promoción de la tenencia de tierra y marcos legales de apoyo, también conversará sobre desafíos para asegurar y mejorar los derechos de tenencia de tierra y los recursos para las comunidades indígenas y locales, entre otros.
