AMPB launches free virtual academy to strengthen communication skills in indigenous and local communities

Feb 14, 2022 | News

The Community Communication Academy will open its doors to the indigenous and local communities of Mesoamerica! The Academy will offer virtual, free and open workshops with the aim of strengthening capacities for communication from the territories, so that more people can document and disseminate their territorial processes to the outside, as well as share and organize themselves internally. Thus, it aims to animate native narratives of the territorial realities of the region. In addition, it seeks to strengthen the technical capacities of local communicators.

The workshops will be offered periodically through the Zoom platform, and will cover basic topics such as cell phone photography, how to create more effective presentations, tips for spokesmanship, and advanced content such as sound and video editing. The level of each workshop (basic, intermediate or advanced) will be communicated with each invitation, as well as if prior knowledge is required or not. In this way, the Academy seeks to reach people from the community bases who want to learn more about communication, as well as more experienced local communicators.

“At AMPB we understand community communication as a very powerful political advocacy tool; that is why it is so important to continue creating training spaces for the territories. If we can better communicate what is happening in our community, we have more possibilities to achieve our goals, from our own cosmogony”, explained Levi Sucre, Coordinator of AMPB.

Training program

The Academy workshops are taught in Spanish by professionals with extensive experience in each subject. The trainings are open to the public, so people who are not part of the AMPB member organizations can also participate. The initiative will encourage the active participation of women and young people.

The first activity of the Academy will be the Basic Cell Phone Photography Workshop, on Thursday, February 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (Central America and Mexico time) – 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (Panama time). Visit www.alianzamesoamericana.org/es/academia/ to register.

The Community Communication Academy is a joint effort of the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests (AMPB) and two of its lines of work: the Mesoamerican School of Leadership and the Coordinator of Territorial Women Leaders of Mesoamerica. In parallel, the AMPB will continue the face-to-face training efforts in territory carried out by all its lines of work, and which will now be complemented with the virtual space of the Academy.
