Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests greets COICA in its 30th Anniversary

Thanks to the work done by the leaders of COICA, situations that threaten the Amazonian indigenous peoples and their proposals to address them have been discussed in international forums, through three decades of work, obtaining significant results, which has made of COICA one of the most well recognize indigenous organizations internationally.

The Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests (AMPB) sends warm greetings to the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA), on its 30th anniversary.

Thanks to the work done by the leaders of COICA, situations that threaten the Amazonian indigenous peoples and their proposals to address them have been discussed in international forums, through three decades of work, obtaining significant results, which has made of COICA one of the most well recognize indigenous organizations internationally.

Recently the COICA has played a leading role in placing on the international agenda the “Amazonian Indigenous REDD +” (RIA), and also has a key role in the continuity of the Indian Pavilion, an area of massive call launched with great success at COP20 in Lima, and is expected to increase its capacity to influence the COP21, to be held in December in Paris.

COICA proposals have been focused on territorial security, stability and legal compliance with legislation favorable to indigenous peoples, environmental conservation, and, with the fight against climate change, etc.

The COICA was created in Lima, Peru, on 14 March 1984. Currently is headquartered in the city of Quito, Ecuador and represents the interests of the following indigenous organizations in the Amazon Basin:

-Asociación Interétnica de la Desarrollo de la Selva Peruana (AIDESEP – Perú);
-Asociación de Pueblos Amerindios de Guyana (APA – Guyana) Confederación de Pueblos Indígenas de Bolivia (CIDOB – Bolivia);
-Coordinadora de las Organizaciones Indígenas de la Amazonía Brasileña (COIAB – Brasil);
-Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas de la Amazonía Ecuatoriana (CONFENIAE – Ecuador);
-Federación de Organizaciones Autóctonas de Guyana Francesa (FOAG – Guyana Francesa);
-Consejo Nacional Indio de Venezuela (CONIVE – Venezuela);
-Organización de Indígenas de Surinam (OIS – Surinam);
-Organización de Pueblos Indígenas de la Amazonía Colombiana (OPIAC – Colombia).
