AMPB will join AMAN from Indonesia during its 16th aniversary

A delegation from the Mesoamerican Alliance of People and Forests (AMPB) will be participating during the month of march in the 16 aniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago (Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara, AMAN) from Indonesia.

A delegation from the Mesoamerican Alliance of People and Forests (AMPB) will be participating during the month of march in the 16 aniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Alliance of the Archipelago (Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara, AMAN) from Indonesia.

In addition to the Mesoamerican delegation, AMAN´s event will convene to the President of Indonesia, along hundreds of indigenous leaders of the archipelago.

The celebration will begin on March 10th with a press conference that will have the participation of Cacique Cándido Mezúa, member of the Executive Committee of the AMPB, and Abdon Nababan, General Secretary of AMAN.

On the 11th will be held the discussion “Territories and Forests, ensuring the recognition and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities”, which involved the AMPB, among other international participants. The official celebration on AMAN will be held on March 17th, and it will have the presence of the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo.

AMAN was founded on March 17th , 1999, and now is considered the largest indigenous organization in the world. It brings together around 2,244 communities, with more than 17 million of people. Globally, AMAN and AMPB together with REPALEF (from the Congo Basin) and the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) have worked in order to make an impact on scenarios such as World Summit Climate 2014 (New York, USA), and COP20 (Lima, Peru), on issues such as titling of indigenous territories, climate funds, Free, Prior and Informed Consent and violence and criminalization of indigenous leaders.

As part of the AMAN celebrations, the Itinerary Film Festival If not us then who, will take place, this festival presents a series of short films that shows the daily struggle of indigenous peoples from around the world in the defense of their forests from the threats that they are facing.

The anniversary celebrations will be held in different parts of the archipelago until March 29.
